"Your light WILL shine when all else fades"
This line is from the song " From The Inside Out"  by Hillsong United. Today, I visited Hillsong church in New York city, something I always love to do. When we were singing this, I felt compelled and extremely inspired.  I have sang and played this song multiple times, and yes, it does get me on some sort of a "Jesus-high" whenever I sing it. ("Jesus-high": noun: being ecstatic about Jesus; being moved spiritually in such as way that nothing else matters) Today, however it took on new meaning. I started thinking about what this line meant to me. I kept repeating it over and over again, getting very excited when it was approaching in the song. "Your light will shine when all else fades" ...what does it mean to you? Do you take it physicallwhere you imagine Jesus as a beaming light in darkness? Or, do you take it emotionally where you think of even through all of the messiness of your life, Jesus is consistent? I took this line both ways. When I picture Jesus in my mind, I picture Him standing on clouds, and rays of light coming behind him, shining all around like a Christmas angel. I can see Jesus as a light in darkness ....

1 John 1:6-7 "If we claim to have fellowship with Him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin."

....but I can also take it emotionally. Naturally, over-analyzing things, I broke this sentence down.

"Your Light"
-Jesus is the light of the earth (John 8:12 "When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but have the light of life'"

"Will Shine"
-The word choice for 'will' could not have summed the song up more. It doesn't say 'maybe shine' or 'sometimes shine' or 'can shine'-it says will. The word 'will' has a permanence to it. It gives a promise that it won't sometimes shine, but it WILL shine. Always.

"When All Else Fades"
-This is a very powerful part of the lyric. It pretty much says that things will fail you, and other things will fade. I took this as 'else'   meaning earthly things that we as humans cling onto, such as...
  • sex
  • money
  • materialism
  • acceptance
  • greediness
  • work
....the list goes on. I then substituted some of these into the song.

* "Your light will shine when sex fades"
** "Your light will shine when materialism fades"
*** "Your light will shine when acceptance fades"

These lyrics represent the fact that Jesus will never fail or leave you. It promises that he WILL shine his light to you, even when you fail Him. It is saying that you can cling onto earthly things, like the ones mentioned above, but He will still be there. Earthly things can and will destroy us if we put them as a first priority (Colossians 3:5 "Put to death therefore, whatever brings to your earthly nature...") however, if we put God as our priority, he will not fail us.

"And now, I've got a brand new mindset, I can finally see the sunset (the light), yeah, this is home"

~"This is Home" by Switchfoot

I am changelled to see God as the source of my light this week, and to understand that God will be there to shine His light when everything else goes dark.

In Him,
Cassie
